Midnight Prank Calls in Morocco

Last summer, I went on a trip with my cousin and grandparents to Agadir, Morocco. Honestly, it was one of the best vacations I’ve ever had—beautiful beachside views, warm weather, super friendly locals, and a hotel that felt just fancy enough to make me feel spoiled but not out of place.

The rooms were cozy but only had two beds, so we split up: me and my cousin in one room, my grandparents in the other. Each room had a little landline phone on the nightstand, the kind of phone you barely see anymore unless you’re in a hotel. You could dial the room number to call another room directly.

Now… this is where our boredom and sleep deprivation kicked in.

My cousin had this idea one night around midnight. “What if we prank-call Grandma and Grandpa?” He pulls up this weird French YouTube video—it was just some guy talking, probably a vlog or something—and said we should play it through the phone speaker. We were in Morocco, after all, so a mysterious French voice at midnight didn’t seem too far-fetched.

So we did it. I dialed their room. He played the video. And we hung up.

We expected them to come banging on the door… but nothing happened.

So the next night, we did it again. And the next night. Sometimes at midnight, sometimes at 2 or even 3 in the morning. We tried switching videos—sometimes creepy ones, sometimes just straight-up nonsense. We had no plan, just this chaotic ritual of giggling under the covers while one of us held the phone and the other cued up a video.

The wild part? They never figured it out. Not once. No accusations, no weird comments at breakfast the next day, not even a mention of being woken up.

To this day, they still have no clue. And every time I think about that trip, I can’t help but laugh. It’s such a dumb, harmless memory, but it made those nights feel like a little secret mission. One I’m definitely not ready to tell them about anytime soon.
